MCOM 2350 E-Portfolio Assignment

Event 1: Fiesta Parade

September 16, 2017

The first event I attended was a parade celebrating the Hispanic community of Lubbock. The parade took place on Broadway Avenue and we watched from the curb in front of Broadway Church of Christ.

We saw several different groups in the parade, including churches, dance teams, girl and boy scouts, musicians, and military. Representatives for the local Latino newspaper handed out copies of their paper to us. People running for various local political positions came by and shook hands with us. I was impressed with the closeness of the Latino community here in Lubbock. Everyone out at the parade seemed to know each other.

Event 2: Spanish Class at Texas A&M

September 22, 2017

For this event, I joined my sister for her Spanish class at Texas A&M. I did not take any photos, as phones were not allowed in class, but can vouch for my attendance in other ways if needed.

My sister, Molly, is a sophomore at Texas A&M. She is a business management major with a minor in Spanish. She has been taking Spanish classes since middle school and is nearly fluent. The class was SPAN 303, Composition and Conversation, taught by Eduardo Espina, a famous Spanish journalist.

That day in class, they received back a paper they had recently written and discussed them. The entire class was given in Spanish, so I didn't understand all of it, but was still able to pick up on a few things here and there. After the class was over, I had the opportunity to speak with her professor about going into media after graduation and he gave me helpful advice.

Meeting someone who had been involved in global media and hearing about their experiences was really interesting and much of what he had to say was relevant to what I had been learning in class. I did more research on Espina after attending his class: https://hisp.tamu.edu/people/faculty/eduardo-espina/

Event 3: "Not Just Black"

November 30, 2017

For this event, I attended a presentation put on by the Black Student Association called "Not Just Black". The purpose of this event was

I did not take any photos at this event, but I did take notes. The event was a presentation put on by several members of the group highlighting the achievements of Black and African/American people throughout history. There were many that I did not previously know about. Many members expressed their feelings on the current political climate and provided encouragement to one another.

Attending this event was a much needed reminder that I still have a lot of learning to do about other people's cultures. I feel that I left with a more open mind than I came in with.

MCOM 2320—Narrative Writing

This assignment was harder than I thought it would be—I didn't feel like I had anything interesting to write about. I felt that I used "I" too often (ironic considering this sentence's structure) but didn't really know how else to structure my sentences because I was really the only character in the story. i kept having to omit unimportant details and narrow down what was most important. Overall, I think it turned out okay, but next time I would write about an experience that other people were involved in.

MCOM 2320—Strategic Writing

I enjoyed this project because it gave me a little bit more creative freedom. I chose a topic that was something I wanted to happen (I really do want an HEB in Lubbock!) and even attempted to keep it accurate by researching available lots and parts of town that didn't have a grocery store nearby. Now I just hope to see this news release in real life one day!

MCOM 2320—Informative Writing

This assignment was one of the more challenging ones for me. I really struggled to come up with a topic, and was not really satisfied with my topic after finishing the assignment because I felt it wasn't newsworthy. Asking people if I could interview them and record the conversations made me nervous, and I regretted not interviewing more people. However, I feel that I did the best I could with what I had, and that I was able to get the point across.

MCOM 2320—Academic Writing

I have done many academic writing assignments before, so I pretty much knew the drill on this. However, I've used so many different types of citations that it's hard to keep them straight. I also found it difficult to find peer-reviewed information on such a specific topic that is relatively new. Overall, I am satisfied with how my part of the paper turned out.

MCOM 2320—Business Writing

This assignment challenged me because it was the first time I'd ever had to write a cover letter for a job. Selling myself was much harder than I thought it would be. Overall I feel that this assignment prepared me for applying for jobs after graduation.

Big Bend Trip

This past January, I made a road trip to Big Bend National Park. Due to a last-minute change in plans, I ended up going by myself—against everyone's advice—and had a fantastic time.

I spent my first day in the park just driving around so I could decide what to hike the next day.

I returned to my campsite at Rancho Topanga just in time to catch the sunset. I set up my tripod at the entrance and caught some pretty spectacular views:

Then I spotted the landowner's horses, and couldn't resist grabbing a few photos there too.

I knew it was going to be dark out there, but I wasn't prepared for it to be pitch-black. I miserably failed at making a campfire (lol), ate snacks for dinner, and fell asleep at 9 pm.

I woke up the next morning to this beautiful sunrise, and headed into the park to hike.

I hit the hot springs trail first, on a recommendation. It was a short hike, and I met a nice couple from Canada while soaking my feet in the water.

Next I headed into the Chisos Mountains to hike the Lost Mine Trail (spoiler alert—I didn't find a mine. I guess it was lost...). It was a 4.2 mile round trip to the top, and the elevation was about 7,000 feet. The weather was pretty overcast and cold on the way up, but the view from the top was spectacular.

After I finished, I was too tired to do another hike, but still wanted to hang out in the park. I went back to my favorite spot in the park, Sotol Vista, found a nice rock to lean back against, set my camera up on my tripod, and read my book (To Kill a Mockingbird) until sunset.

Afterwards I headed out of the park to grab dinner and wait for it to get dark enough to see the stars. When I returned to the park, there was a lightning storm on the horizon.

By the time I made it back to my campsite, the moon had risen, and it was so bright it drowned out most of the stars.

On Sunday, I wanted to get one last hike in before I headed home, but got sidetracked by Tuff Canyon on the way.

When I was almost to the trailhead of my hike, a rainbow appeared! I immediately pulled over to the side of the road to catch it.

Then I made my final hike in Santa Elena Canyon. It was gorgeous!

When I returned to my campsite, the wind was blowing at 21 mph—making packing up pretty difficult. My tent went into parachute mode and my stuff was flying everywhere.

When I made it home, I was reprimanded by a few people for pulling such a dangerous move, but I regret nothing. I had a great trip, and learned to enjoy my own company and made important decisions myself. I highly recommend both Big Bend and "me-cations"!

A new website!

Welcome to my new website!!

Madelynemajors.com has been in the works since early November. I spent just about every day in class (sorry, professors) building pages, creating layouts, uploading content, and perfecting every aspect of my site. I wanted something professional, but that would still show my personality and creativity, and I believe that's what this site has become.

Please feel free to explore and browse around. Feedback and suggestions are always welcome!
